holyspiritGospel Reading: John 13:21-33,36-38

21 When Jesus had thus spoken, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, “Truly, truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.” 22 The disciples looked at one another, uncertain of whom he spoke. 23 One of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, was lying close to the breast of Jesus; 24 so Simon Peter beckoned to him and said, “Tell us who it is of whom he speaks.” 25 So lying thus, close to the breast of Jesus, he said to him, “Lord, who is it?” 26 Jesus answered, “It is he to whom I shall give this morsel when I have dipped it.” So when he had dipped the morsel, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. 27 Then after the morsel, Satan entered into him. Jesus said to him, “What you are going to do, do quickly.” 28 Now no one at the table knew why he said this to him. 29 Some thought that, because Judas had the money box, Jesus was telling him, “Buy what we need for the feast”; or, that he should give something to the poor.30 So, after receiving the morsel, he immediately went out; and it was night.

31 When he had gone out, Jesus said, “Now is the Son of man glorified, and in him God is glorified; 32 if God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and glorify him at once. 33 Little children, yet a little while I am with you. You will seek me; and as I said to the Jews so now I say to you, `Where I am going you cannot come.’ 36 Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus answered, “Where I am going you cannot follow me now; but you shall follow afterward.” 37 Peter said to him, “Lord, why cannot I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.” 38 Jesus answered, “Will you lay down your life for me? Truly, truly, I say to you, the cock will not crow, till you have denied me three times.

Meditation:
Jesus’ disciples were put to the test. What was the difference between Peter and Judas? Judas deliberately betrayed his Master while Peter, in a moment of weakness, denied him. Judas’ act was calculated. Peter, however, never meant to do what he did. He acted impulsively, out of weakness and cowardice. Jesus knew both the strength of Peter’s loyalty and the weakness of his resolution. He had a habit of speaking with his heart without thinking through the implications of what he was saying.

The Holy Spirit will give us grace and strength in our time of testing. If we have Jesus in our hearts, we will walk in the light of his truth and love. If we turn our backs on him we will stumble and fall in the ways of sin and darkness. Are you ready to follow Jesus in his way of the cross?

Prayer:
“Bestow upon me, O Lord my God, understanding to know you, diligence to seek you, wisdom to find you, and a faithfulness that may finally embrace you; through Jesus Christ, our Lord.” (Prayer of St. Thomas Aquinas)

Dear God,

There is nothing like the feeling of being loved!

You created us to love and be loved.

I thank you for all the love you have given me and shown me throughout all my days.

Thank you for all the special touches and blessings that let me know you care about even the smallest details of my life and that you love me no matter what.

Thank you for friends who are there for me…

and that I can be there for…through the seasons of life.

Thank you for the love of parents and children and extended family.

I am grateful for the love in my life.

I pray that every person will experience love…especially your unending

. . . . . far-reaching

. . . . . peace-bringing

. . . . . merciful

. . . . . and unconditional love.

This I  pray and offer my whole-hearted love and thankfulness.

Amen.

O Lord our God, under the shadow of Thy wings let us hope.

Thou wilt support us, both when little and even to gray hairs.

When our strength is of Thee, it is strength

but, when our own, it is feebleness

 We return unto Thee,

O Lord, that from their weariness our soul may rise towards Thee

leaning on the thing which Thou has created

 and passing on to Thyself

who hast wonderfully made them

for with Thee is refreshment and true strength

Amen

God,
grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change
the courage to change the things I can
and the wisdom to know the difference.

Amen

I hold myself to be incapable of hating any being on earth.

By a long course of prayerful discipline,

I have ceased for over forty years to hate anybody.

I know this is a big claim.

Nevertheless, I make it in all humility.

To everything there is a season

And a time to every purpose under the heaven

A time to be born, and a time to die

A time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted

A time to kill, and a time to heal

A time to break down, and a time to build up

A time to weep, and a time to laugh

A time to mourn, and a time to dance

A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together

A time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;

A time to seek, and a time to lose

A time to keep, and a time to cast away

A time to rend, and a time to sew

A time to keep silence, and a time to speak

A time to love, and time to hate

A time for war, and a time for peace

Ecclesiastes 3:1-8

Lord God,

I know not what I ought to ask of Thee

Thou only know what I need

Thou lovest me better than I know how to love myself.

O Father! Give to Thy child that which he himself  knows not how to ask.

I dare not ask either for crosses or consolations

I simply present myself before Thee

I open my heart to Thee

Behold my needs which I know not myself

see and do according to Thy tender mercy

Smite, or heal

depress me, or raise me up

I adore all Thy purposes without knowing them

I am silent

I offer myself in sacrifice

I yield myself to Thee

I would have no other desire than to accomplish Thy will

Teach me to pray

Pray Thyself in me.

Amen.
