Pope Francis Universal Intention for December
( Christmas, hope for humanity )

That the birth of the Redeemer may bring peace and hope to all people of good will.

One night a long time ago an angel appeared to some shepherds and told them a savior had been born nearby who would save people from their sins and ultimately from death. Then many angels appeared proclaiming “peace on earth, good will to all.” What an amazing scene in the hills outside Bethlehem!

Jesus was born to reconcile humanity with God and with one another. He came to establish the just order based on loving God above all else and on loving others as children of God. Sharing human life to the point of suffering and dying, Jesus brought hope. He rose from the dead never to die again, and he offers eternal life to all who come to him.

Pope Francis has called Christmas “the feast of trust and of hope which overcomes uncertainty and pessimism.” He said: “And the reason for our hope is this: God is with us… he comes to abide with mankind, he chooses earth as his dwelling place to remain with people…in joy or in sorrow. Therefore, earth is no longer only ‘a valley of tears’; rather, it is the place where God himself has pitched his tent, it is the meeting place of God with humanity, of God’s solidarity with people.”

The Son of God took flesh so he could be with us. He offered his flesh on the cross for the life of the world. He continues to offer his flesh, his Body and Blood, in the Eucharist. As Pope Francis said, “This closeness of God to every man and woman, to each of us, is a gift that never fades.”

May this Christmas bring peace and hope to all!

Reflection

Dear Lord,

please give me…
A few friends who understand me and remain my friends;
A work to do which has real value,
without which the world would be the poorer;
A mind unafraid to travel, even though the trail be not blazed;
An understanding heart;
A sense of humor;
Time for quiet, silent meditation;
A feeling of the presence of God;
The patience to wait for the coming of these things,
With the wisdom to recognize them when they come.

Amen.

A ray of hope flitters in the sky

A tiny star lights up way up high

All across the land dawns a brand new morn

This comes to pass when a child is born

A silent wish sails the seven seas

The winds have changed whisper in the trees

And the walls of doubt crumble tossed and torn

This comes to pass when a child is born

A rosy hue settles all around

You’ve got the feel you’re on solid ground

For a spell or two no-one seems forlorn

This comes to pass when a child is born

And all of this happened

Because the world is waiting

Waiting for one child

Black, white, yellow, no one knows

But a child that would grow up and turn tears to

laughter

Hate to love, war to peace

And everyone to everyone’s neighbour

Misery and suffering would be forgotten forever

It’s all a dream and illusion now

It must come true, sometimes soon somehow

All across the land dawns a brand new morn

This comes to pass when a child is born

All across the land dawns a brand new morn

This comes to pass when a child is born

When a child is born

Dear God of Compassion,

There is such a hole in our hearts.  Today should be a day of joy, but we feel emptiness and loss.

While the world celebrates around , I remember Christmas celebrations of the past and people long to have we loved We bring our sorrows to You, Lord, like some odd gift of the magi and dump them at Your feet. In our blind tears we wonder if anyone can possibly understand the depth of our sadness.

We know, You can. You sent Your son to be with us in our deepest sorrows and we know that even though we might not feel it now, You are here with us, grieving with us, caring for us in our sadness.

Dearest Lord, help us to turn to the one we miss so much today and speak. Help us heal the loss of our parting and help us not to regret the things we didn’t say. Sorrow tears at our hearts, but today we ask that our  loss soften our hearts and make us more compassionate with everyone we meet, so that our loss may become a gift to others.

Amen.

Holy Creator of Trees,
bless with your abundant grace
this our Christmas tree as a symbol of joy.
May its evergreen branches be a sign
of your never-fading promises.
May its colorful lights and ornaments call us
to decorate with love our home and our world.
May the gifts that surround this tree
be symbols of the gifts we have received
from the Tree of Christ’s Cross.
Holy Christmas tree within our home,
may Joy and Peace come and nest
in your branches and in our hearts.

Amen.
